How To: Brake the Hornet
How to stop the FA/18 without spinning




There has been some controversy over the braking system on the Acceleration FA/18. Some players are reporting that when they apply the brakes on landing they tend to spin out and are unable to control the aircraft.

So, I decided to put together a tutorial on the procedure I use to land and roll out the Acceleration FA/18. This procedure is fairly close to what an actual Navy pilot would use (I have been told by one).

First, have a look at the video, then we'll go over the specific procedures.







The procedure that I use when landing this aircraft on a paved runway of military length is as follows:

1) Approach speed about 130-150 knots
2) Full flaps
3) At touchdown, deploy the spoiler
4) Keep the nose wheel up until my speed drops to about 80-90 knots
5) Rollout to about 60 knots before braking.
6) Begin lightly tapping the brakes. (I use a button on my joystick for this, rather than the toe-brakes on my rudder pedals to avoid differential braking.)

This aircraft is so small and light that I usually have plenty of runway and don't need to bleed speed that quickly.

This procedure should allow you to always bring the FA/18 to taxi speed without spinning out. If you're spinning, then you haven't properly controlled the aircraft, and as PIC, it's your fault.

Simple as that.
